Roe vs. Wade turns 35 today, as I will in a few months (how cool is that, that we're the same age?).
What does this mean?
It means that I've grown up in a world with choice. I've been surrounded by choice and so incredibly lucky to live in a part of the country that does not typically frown upon it.
I grew up in a time where Planned Parenthood was not a dirty word. In fact, quite the opposite, serving as a place that young people could go to for support and education.
I grew up with sex education in school, real sex education that gave young people the tools they'd need rather than preaching abstinence (not that there's anything wrong with a teen remaining abstinent, I just don't think it's realistic to force it upon the entire young adult population - we aren't made that way, it's our DNA). Education is, and always has been, our greatest tool.
Life is a gift, and I value it like nobody's business.
But I do not value judgement, or inflicting one's beliefs upon others - and if you didn't read this post because it isn't your belief, I respect that.
But standing up for our rights, rights that have been decided and voted upon by the people, is something that I believe in. I believe in a woman's right to choose. I believe in adoption. I believe in birth. I believe in choice.
And it is nobody's right to take that away from us.
And it is not my right to tell you what to do, but it is my right to voice my support for something that I believe in.
Today is also a very important day for another reason.
When I was a little girl, I wasn't the nicest of big sisters to my younger brother.
I've been trying to make it up to him for the past 31 years, and today it's his birthday.
I am so happy that he was born.
If you're an intelligent, single, fun, happy, caring, generous, adventureous, kind, honest, independent, loyal, beautiful on the inside and out, loves animals, thoughtful, wonderful, appreciates art, musical, non-smoker, creative, imaginative woman between the ages of 25-35 (he's 31) email me.
See? I'm not too picky, I only want the best for him!
