Sometimes Laughter IS the Best Medicine

With the weather being so hot, cooking a semi-warm dinner for my family that does not involve the b-b-q has become somewhat of a problem. I refuse to heat up the oven for more than 15 minutes at a time (which does a number on the inside temperature of our house), leaving me with few options other than frozen chicken nuggets or . . . frozen chicken nuggets.

We've been eating a lot of nuggets from the freezer this week (and then quickly turning off the 400-degree oven so as not to create a sauna in our own home!).

While the kids dine on their gourmet meal, I usually fix something else for us (that is, when Brett isn't at work - in which case all bets are off and I'll be found hovering over my childrens' plates, drooling over their greasy yumminess until they give their panting mother a wee bite).

I always try to add fresh veggies and fruit into the mix so as not to completely ruin their health. But kids, even my kids (who will eat veggies of all shapes and sizes) love to dip in ranch dressing, don't' they? Kind of ruins the whole "healthy" aspect of the vegetable-eating, but still, not the worst condiment in the world, so I let them dip away!

But don't let the ranch dip touch the nuggets.

Oh no.

That would be wrong.

That may result in a certain 8-year-old boy tossing the entire contents of his stomach into your kitchen sink. Yes, a sink full of dishes waiting to be loaded into the dishwasher. Yum.

After the "ranch and nugget" incident, I learned a valuable lesson: Never, ever, even if your life depends on it, put the ranch too close to anything else on your son's plate - use a little ramekin instead to avoid this situation entirely.

And, always have an empty sink. This makes cleaning up a whole lot easier!

Wine will be helpful in this situation as well. May I suggest a little Red Guitar (you can find it at Target for $9.99 a bottle and it's imported) and a little humor.

Wine is DEFINITELY the key in this situation.

Wow. Oh, wow.

Now I don't feel so bad about my kids dipping odd foods into odd dips.....they don't care. It grosses me out. But I guess it could always be worse!!!

Wine. Definitely wine.

LOL. I was funny like that as a kid, too. NOTHING BETTER BE TOUCHING on my plate or I'd lose my mind.

hahaha.

Wine gets me through most things in life these days, girl.

And Ranch gets hubby through most things!!!

I have just found your blog and I adore it. You write so honestly about being a mother that I recognise my own experience. You need to know that dry food kids become dry food teenagers. My son (aged 17 and a half) goes mental if the slightest drop of unwanted sauce hits the veg. He is otherwise normal. We have learned to live with it but try to protect him from the astonishment of friends and relations.
Looking forward to spending some quality time in your archives.

Why is it that wine seems to help in almost every problem?

At least he made it TO the sink. There is a positive to this.

Give me some JD while you're in the liquor cabinet.

All I can do is quote my grandma Adele here and say, Oh My...

Oooh. Yucky. Poor guy! I have a feeling he won't be dipping his nuggets into ranch again anytime soon.

Always, always, always have wine on hand!

Ugh, I have definitely taken note of the importance of separating foods and sauces. Thanks for sparing the rest of us.
