All Creatures Great and Small

Just as I was stepping into the shower (yes, it was 11:30 am - shut up!) I heard her cries.

"Mama! Mama!"

I wrapped a towel around me as best I could (so as not to permanently scar my 9-year-old son with an image of his 35-year-old nekkid mother) and darted to the top of the stairs.

"What? What is wrong?" I asked her, trying to triage the situation from my perch without losing any more dignity by letting the neighbors get a glimpse of me running around in a towel through the windows late in the morning.

"It's a spider mommy."

Oh wonderful, I thought, a spider - and here I am, powerless to protect my daughter from the awful beast.

"The spider was on my wagon and I killed it!"

She did what? She killed that thing all by herself?

"Can I flush it down the toilet?"

"Go ahead honey, I am so proud of you. You are such a big girl, taking care of that spider all by yourself." I told her, clinging to my towel for dear life. For my fear of spiders is even greater than my fear of vampires, if you can imagine such a thing.

And just like that, she became Katie, The Mighty Spider Slayer. I will know who to call the next time I have to venture out into the garage freezer late at night to get a roast for the next day, the whole time being eye-balled by a spider the size of a tennis ball (I am so not kidding). Instead of throwing a slab of raw meat in his direction to distract him while I get what I need from the freezer, I'll just send my fearless daughter after him!

I'm telling you, if I hadn't seen her moments after her birth, I would never believe that child was related to me.

But I am so glad she is.

Way to go Katie!!

I could use a Spider Slayer myself. I have three whimpy boys, and frankly, I'm not too comfortable myself around anything with eight legs...

Aww...she's a cutie! My youngest screams her head off with spiders--literally. Her head just flies right off. Anyway, she's deathly afraid, but then when I go to kill the spiders, she howls even louder that I should not KILL it and set it free outside. Jeesh. Can't win for losing.

She gets the gold medal for bravery for sure! I can't stand spiders!

That is so awesome of her not to be scared!! Just remember you are bigger than the spider, you can squish him. :)

You can send her to my house. They are BAD this year! And my kids are all about freaking out.

Ok, despite my fear of spiders being so great that when I saw your comment about this post I shrank away from my laptop, I popped over to read of this Mighty Spider Slaying wonder.

Incredible, she'll go far being able to slay her own arachnids. And on that note, let us never speak of this again!

We're a spider-saving family. Well, at least I am. My kids are too deathly afraid to go anywhere near them and I'm pretty sure my husband squashes them when I'm not around. So I guess it is just me.

Hey I have a Wyatt too. Tell her that is awesome, she's already more brave than many out there! ha-ha

Bless her, I think you could make good money hiring her spider-slayer skills out. I know I'm always looking for someone to save the day when I see a spider in my house.

Can she come live at my house? I'm terrified of spiders. When I was home on maternity leave last time I called in tears asking him to come home and kill a spider that was stalking me in the living room. Ok, that might have been mildly influenced by my PPD, but I HATE spiders. I still scream if I see them anywhere in the house.
Good for your little girl!

That's awesome!!! I hate (and we don't use that word in our house wink) spiders! Snakes are right there on the list next to them. Your daughter is my hero.
Happy POW!
