Meet the Parents

Hi, you don't know me but I need to ask you a few questions. First of all, do you have car insurance? Do you have a criminal history? Are you a registered sex offender? What is your cell phone number? Where do you work? What is your policy about discipline? Will you be ice skating too? Do you solemnly swear to supervise my fearless child at all times?

McRae was invited to his first boy-girl birthday party that was not for a relative or close family friend. It is tomorrow. And so I, being the nosy parent that I am, had to question the girl's mother before I would allow him to attend.

"Sorry for asking so many questions, I trust that you are good people. It is just that he is my first, and I don't really know you. I hope you understand." I apologized.

She chuckled a bit.

"I have a 17-year-old boy, I know how you feel."

At which point I declared her my mentor and asked her if she minded if I call her when my son begins puberty.

Did I mention that he started wearing deodorant a few weeks ago?

I am not ready. I am not ready. I am not ready.

Whoa!!! My sister went through that this year with her 12-year-old. They had a school DANCE for the incoming 6th graders!!!

My sister and I got outvoted by the menfolk, and her son went to the dance. My sister and I live about 200 miles from each other, so we stayed on the phone with each other and cried over how fast he was growing and shared stories about him growing up the whole time he was at the dance until he came home!!!

Hey, if you need to commiserate, you know where to find me!!

My 15-year-old just had a little party and one of the parents came in and visited with me a little bit before she left her son with us. Her son was mortified, but I appreciated the parent's intentions. In my experience, far too many parents of teens don't really care where their teens are or who they're with. . . . or maybe they just trust their kids more than I do. ; )

Not a nosy parent... a GOOD parent. Kudos to you for following up on the details of a party thrown for ever-quickly maturing tweens.

And I wouldn't be ready either. I mean, look at that face!!!

I would have asked to inspect the premises.

No such thing as an overbearing parent. You're just doing your job.

Hope he has a great time....
But also hope he does not have a girlfriend...

At least he will wear the deoderant :-) I am so glad someone besides me worries about these things! My daughter lost a friend over my stance on guns in the home -- the friend knew where the key was to the gun safe. When I shared that with police officer Mom she pretty much hated me. Been the could shoulder ever since. Sorry -- this mom freaks out about guns.

Nice that you have a new mentor too!

These milestones just whiz by, don't they. I often imagine an actual pile of stones on the back porch (there's the first smile! There's crawling! There's eating a banana! There's writing your name...). A friend of ours always used to tease us with "next thing you know, she'll be driving"...seems like it will be just about the next thing.

And no, you're not overboard, and I'm glad there are other parents out there doing things like checking up on where their kids will be. Love your smart parenting posts.

I haven't gone thru any of this yet, but I can see that it is coming. I just wish mine would stay young 4EVER!

That will so be me in a few years. And good for you... You don't know what's going on at that person's house and what your kid could be exposed too... So yeah... Completely understand...

Good for you for asking the questions to feel comfortable and safe about it. I would do the same thing!

I DO NOT LOOK FORWARD TO THIS... (my kid is a toddler now).

Can I have her number too? Or can you ask her, how did she make it all the way to 17? I'm not sure we're going to make 13.

Boy/girl party? Ack. Not ready.

Boy/Girl party? NOOOOOO! I am so not ready for that either! I almost blew my stack when I heard the Princess talking about a "boyfriend". I told her at eight, she had NO BUSINESS even discussing the idea of a boyfriend. I am glad you took the direct approach with the mom. I am always wondering how to handle that when The Princess is invited over to someone's house I do not know. As of yet, I have not allowed her to go!

Oh god I remember when my little brothers started wearing deodorant. It made me feel really old.

Okay, I feel so much better. I'm not the only person who worries about this step, and it looks like I can obsess for the next 5 years till my oldest is 10. (OHMIGOD, he's going to be 10 in 5 years. How did this happen?)

Yes, my big thing is guns. "Do you have guns in the house and are they properly registered and safely stored?" Yeah, my son will hate me soon enough.
